Chapter 43

Rome, Italy, December 18th

While seated at his desk that Thursday morning, with his hands crossed in front of his lips and his eyes closed, Andrea Danzi was trying to make sense of all the information he had gathered to that point and that was confusedly fluctuating in his head.

At least now that he wasn’t with Susan, he didn’t have to worry about hiding all his perplexities and troubles.

A moment later he sat back on the leather armchair and recapitulated. Alexandra Becskei’s murder had taken place on December thirteenth, probably between seven and nine p.m. The blood that had been found with traces of Luminol suggested that the woman had been killed near the garage, in the basement, and then her body was moved to that garbage dump.

He took the notes he had written about Alexandra yesterday afternoon and read. At three o’clock the woman went to her photographer, at five-fifteen p.m. she got gas at a station in Via delle Medaglie D’ Oro, and at six she bought a pair of boots at a store in Via Cola di Rienzo. Considering the traffic, if she didn’t stop anywhere else for other errands, she presumably arrived home at approximately seven p.m.

And there, in front of her garage, she had found her killer?

That’s what the investigation was suggesting. Actually, Susan thought that it might have been someone Alexandra was very familiar with, and that both she and her daughter probably knew the killer as well.

To be honest, all those who lived in the building had pretty weak alibis for what they were doing at that time. Gabriele Lenzi and Luigi Blasi were stuck in a traffic jam on their way back home from work; Edoardo Ricci was heading toward his wine bar, in the city center, while his wife was working a few extra hours at her office, by herself. And Rosa Blasi was at home waiting for her husband to arrive for dinner.

Who could verify such undefined circumstances? Danzi wondered in discomfort while getting up from the chair to reach the window.

Susan was convinced there was a connection between Alexandra Becskei’s murder and her daughter’s kidnapping.

And her reasoning would have been fine, but...

His perplexities, he knew, didn’t have to do with just Alexandra’s ex-husband, who was still their first suspect, but mostly because of the proof that was right there on his desk.

Danzi got closer to that little plastic bag in which the proof rested and stood there staring at it for a long time, as if doing so he would understand that it wasn’t what he thought it to be.

“Inspector...”

Danzi raised his eyes and noticed the agent standing at his door.

“What’s going on, Lo Russo?”

The agent handed him a paper. “Here are Alexandra Becskei’s autopsy results—”

“Finally we got it!” Danzi commented as he read the coroner report.

He went through the first few lines, and his expression became more and more perplexed.

“Her ex-husband had good reason to be jealous. As it seems, Alexandra Becskei was pregnant.
